About Fulton
Stadium/Bob Black Field
Long before
Fulton played its first home game at the school, what is now known as
Bob Black Field served as Fultons practice field. Home games from
1951-1964 were played at Evans-Collins Field. In 1964, the North
Knoxville Stadium Association was established with the goal of building
a football stadium at Fulton High School. The NKSA worked hard to raise
money for the project from local businesses and individual donors. In
October of 1964, local dignitaries gathered for the ground breaking of
Fulton Stadium/Falcon Field. The original stadium, consisting of the
middle section of the current stadiums bleachers, along with temporary
stands, seated 3000 people and was ready for the first game of the 1965
season on August 27, 1965 against Unicoi Co. On that historic evening, a
full house watched the Falcons defeat the Blue Devils 13-0. The stadium
was expanded to its current configuration before the 1969 season. Fulton
lost to Sevier Co. 14-8 in the first game in the completed stadium.
Falcon Field was renamed Bob Black Field, in honor of the coach and
athletic director on September 12, 1986. In the dedication game, Fulton
defeated Alcoa 10-7 on Mike Potters overtime field goal. Fulton
concluded the 2002 season with a perfect 8-0 home record, including
three consecutive home victories in the TSSAA Play-offs. For the first
time ever on November 1, 2002, Fulton hosted a live regional cable
broadcast on CSS, as the Falcons defeated the Gibbs Eagles 47-7.

Field Decorations
Fulton takes great
pride in the appearance of Bob Black Field. Many fans have said that
Fultons field is the best-decorated field in the area. The coaching
staff spends many hours on Wednesdays painting the field for Fridays
game. The drop wing falcon on the 50-yard line first appeared during the
1992 season. This is the second season that the falcon has been painted
black. The FHS designs in both end zones debuted in 1993. The current
field design has been in use since the 1996 season. The drop wing falcon
and FHS logos are outlined by hand prior to the start of the season by
Fulton graduates Tim Parker and Jason Harbison.

Fulton at Home
Fulton has
posted a 4-2 record at Bob Black Field this year. Fultons 19 game home
winning streak ended earlier this year at the hands of Austin-East. The
19 game streak set a school record for most consecutive home wins. The
streak began with a win over Rutledge in week five of 2001 until
Fultons semi-final win over Macon Co. in 2003. The Falcons opened their
stadium with a 19 game unbeaten streak (17-0-2) from 1965-1968. Fultons
all-time home record is 115-88-3, and Coach Coatney is 42-31 at home.
Currently, Fulton has a 7-game winning streak in home playoff games, and
has a home record in the playoffs of 9-2. |
Fulton vs Lenoir City-
The Series
Fulton and Lenoir
City meet tonight for the 15th and possibly final time in
history tonight. Lenoir City will move up to 4A next year, and there are
no plans for a return engagement anytime soon. Fulton holds a 9-5
advantage in the series. The teams have split the 6 prior games played
at Fulton. This is the first ever time the teams have ever met in the
post-season. This series dates all the way back to the Ralph Hutchens
era of Fulton football. In 1959, the Falcons traveled to LC and lost to
the Panthers 14-13. In the return trip, Fulton knocked off LC by the
same 14-13 score. The teams did not meet again until 1993. Lenoir City
dominated the rivalry from 1994-1996, as Mr. Football finalist Travis
Adams ran roughshod over the Falcons. LC joined region 2-3A in 1997.
Fulton held a 7-game winning streak in the series until Lenoir City
handed the Falcons a 21-6 loss in week 4 of the season.

Last Meeting
Hurricane rains pelted East Tennessee during
the week leading up to the last Fulton-Lenoir City match-up. Most
area schools moved their games up to Thursday night to avoid the
expected rainfall, but Fulton chose to wait out the rain and play on
Friday as scheduled. This was the only thing that went right for the
Falcons, as the rainfall moved out of the area late Friday morning
making for a pleasant night for football. The undefeated Panthers
manhandled the Falcons en route to a 21-6 victory. The Falcons
jumped on the scoreboard first in the game on a 68-yard TD pass from
Jaren Troutman to Elliott Bishop on Fultons first play of the game.
Lenoir City bounced back on a 48 yard TD run by fullback Chris
Cousins. The Panthers took a 7-6 lead into halftime and never
trailed again. Fulton was held to 28 rushing yards in the game while
Lenoir City ran the ball 49 times for 221 yards. Fulton rebounded
from the defeat to win their next 7 games while Lenoir City lost
their next 4 games.

Last Week
Fultons Elliott
Bishop electrified the home crowd at Bob Black Field with 3 touchdowns
as the Falcons defeated Pigeon Forge 46-7. A 27-point 2nd
quarter helped spell doom for the Tigers. Fulton held a 7-0 lead in the
1st quarter after a 41-yard TD pass from Ish Young to
DeMarcus Matthews. Early in the 2nd quarter, Bishop returned
a Tiger punt 70 yards to give the Falcons a 15-0 advantage. On the next
Fulton possession, Young hit Bishop for a 60-yard TD pass along the
Fulton sideline. Bishop saved his best for last; allowing a Pigeon Forge
punt to roll to the 20-yard line before returning it for an 80-yard
touchdown. Bishop was aided by 5 big blocks on the return by fellow
Falcons including JaMichael Mathis and John Burnette. The game was
halted for close to 30 minutes as a Tiger was taken to the hospital
after Bishops return; his injuries were not serious. Dennis Rogan
concluded the scoring in the 2nd period on a 29-yard run.
Marques Patton and Dennis Freeney had second half touchdown runs for the
Falcons. Fulton held the Tigers to 0 yards passing on the game.

Fulton Flashback- 1960
Fultons first-ever win over Lenoir City came all the way back in 1960,
as the Falcons defeated Lenoir City 14-13 at Lenoir Citys Civitan
Field. Lenoir City got on the board first after stopping the Falcons on
4th down at the LC 24. The Panthers briskly scored on a
six-play 76-yard drive. Gary Freeman scored on a one-yard run. Fulton
rallied by scoring the next two touchdowns. Fulton sprinter Claude
Messamore raced 60-yards for the Falcons first score. The Falcons then
recovered a fumble in Panther territory to set up the second score. QB
Bill Harris hit Nelson Arnold on a 12-yard touchdown pass to give Fulton
a 13-7 lead. Kicker Jim Woods all-important conversion kick was good
and the Falcons led 14-7. The extra
point was huge as LC drove 88-yards in the 3rd quarter and
scored on a 47-yard option run by Ray Neal. The conversion pass was
incomplete as the Falcons held on to the 14-13 victory. Lenoir City
committed 6 turnovers in the game, while allowing the Falcons 198 yards
of total offense. |

Lenoir City football
history
Lenoir City has
one of the strongest football traditions of any team in East Tennessee.
The Panthers are in their 84th season of football, dating
back to 1916. Their overall record is 449-383-33, ranking them at the
top of region 2-3A in all-time wins. The Panthers have made 11 playoff
appearances holding a 8-10 playoff record. LC advanced to the state
semi-finals in both 1979 and 1996. The Panthers last made the playoffs
in 2001, losing to Gatlinburg-Pittman 14-7 in the first round. Lenoir
City upset Region 1 champion Sullivan North 27-8 last week.

Fulton-LC
playoff oddities
Although
Fulton and Lenoir City are playing for the first time tonight in the
playoffs, their playoff histories are somewhat intertwined. This is the
6th time that Fulton and LC have made the playoffs in the
same year. The first year was in 1979 when LC rolled to an undefeated
regular season in class AA, and Fulton made the playoffs despite losing
to both West and A-E. Fultons unlikely playoff run ended with a
first-round loss to eventual champion Oak Ridge, while LC lost the
semi-final game to Maryville. In 1995 both schools were defeated by
eventual champion Marion Co. LC lost 45-20 in round 1, while Fulton lost
65-8 in the 2nd round. Kingston eliminated Fulton and LC in
1998. The Yellow Jackets defeated Fulton 46-6 in the 2nd round, and LC
37-7 in the 3rd round. Kingston went on to become the class
3-A runners-up.
