Coach Buck Coatney
Coach
Buck Coatney is in his 13th season at the helm of the Fulton
football program. His 89-68 record makes him the winningest coach in
school history. Coatneys teams have developed a reputation for both a
physical defense and a high scoring offense. Coatneys roots are colored
maroon and white, as his father John captained Fultons 1959 team.
Coatney was known as a hard-nosed linebacker and tight end on the Falcon
teams of the late 70s. He was named to the all-state team and the
Knoxville Journal defensive player of the year, as he led Fulton to
a region championship in 1979. Coatney earned Honorable-Mention
All-American honors at Furman University where he was coached by current
Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson. He began his coaching career at Furman
as a graduate assistant. After leaving Furman, Coatney spent two years
as an assistant coach at Middlesburg High School in Florida. He returned
to Fulton in 1987, where he served as Defensive Coordinator. He was
named Fultons 11th head coach in 1992. Fulton has advanced
to the playoffs under Coatney for the last 12 years. In 2003, Coatney
directed what was thought to be a rebuilding effort into the schools
first ever state championship team.

About Fulton High School
Fulton
High School opened in 1951 as one of Tennessees first comprehensive
high schools, combining a complete academic curriculum with a full
vocational program. Fulton is located in historic North Knoxville just 5
minutes from the University of Tennessee campus. The school is named for
noted industrialist and inventor Weston M. Fulton. Fulton has developed
a reputation for turning out graduates who have followed the school
motto enter to learn- go forth to serve. A tradition of outstanding
athletic teams has been born at the school. Famous former Falcons
include College Football hall of famer and former Dallas Cowboy D.D.
Lewis, UT basketball All-American Bill Justus, former Vol linebacker
Jackie Walker, four-sport letter winner Ron Widby, and two-time Mr.
Football finalist DeMarcus Stevens. Fultons destiny was almost sealed
in 1992 when the Knox Co. School Board voted to close the school, but
strong protests by alumni and supporters helped to reverse the decision.
The Falcons clinched their first state championship in any sport in 2003
defeating Covington for the class 3A football title. |

up to all the hype as Fulton scored the go-ahead touchdown with less
than 1 minute remaining to defeat A-E 28-21. The standing room only
crowd at Dusty Lennon stadium saw the Falcons race out to an early lead.
Tyrone Cobb scored first for the Falcons on a 40-yard run in the first
quarter. Elliott Bishop stunned his former team with an amazing catch
and run for the second TD, as Fulton held a 14-0 advantage at the half.
The Falcons scored first in the second half on Cobbs 2nd TD
run of 4 yards. Trailing 21-0, A-E went to the air to score 3 touchdowns
courtesy of Mr. Football finalist Albert Harris. The Falcons wrestled
the momentum away from the Roadrunners late in the 4th
quarter after Fulton stopped A-E after a bad snap on a punt near
mid-field. QB Ish Young hit Dennis Rogan on a screen pass to put the
Falcons in scoring position. Facing a 4th and 6 situation on
A-Es 15 yard line Young hit DeMarcus Matthews in the front corner of
the end zone for the winning score with :54 seconds remaining. The
Fulton defense held Harris to only 52 yards rushing on 16 carries, while
rolling up 368 yards of offense against the vaunted A-E defense. It was
the second consecutive year that Fulton defeated the #1 Roadrunners on
their home field in the playoffs.

Region 2-3A
for 2005
Class 3A in the Tennessee will undergo radical
changes for the 2005 season, and many of those changes will be in region
2-3A. Loudon Co. will no longer be represented as Lenoir City will move
up to 4A, while Loudon drops back to 2A. Three teams making the class 3A
quarterfinals last week will play in the new region. Livingston Academy
will make the move east to face Fulton and Austin-East. Gibbs moves to
region 1, while 2003 Division 2 finalist Knoxville Catholic moves into
region 2-3A. It appears that all seven teams in the revamped region will
make strong playoff runs in 2005. Region 2-3A teams will include;
Austin-East, Fulton, Anderson Co., Kingston, Scott, Livingston Academy,
and Knoxville Catholic. According to TSSAA rules, this alignment will be
in place for the next 4 years.
